Introduction to Psychic Development
by Lucia Read
All of creation is interconnected. Although everyone appears to be separate, there really are no separate entities. Ultimately, we are
all the same soul. Psychic intuition is the ability to tap into that universal consciousness—that collective soul—which knows
everything. So for us to perceive the thoughts and feelings of others, all we need to do is elevate our consciousness above the
illusion of separateness.
How do we do this? By raising our vibrational level beyond the level of concrete, everyday reality and up into the level of universal
consciousness. All of us can achieve this through prayer, meditation, visualization, dreams, learning from the experiences of
others, and the use of a tool that works for us. Let’s take a quick look at each one of these in turn.
Number One, meditate. Meditation clears our mind, elevates our consciousness, and connects us to our Higher Self. Meditation is
the key and foremost tool of psychic development—the one indispensable practice.
It’s easy. You know how your mind unfocuses and relaxes when you’re gazing into a crackling fire? That’s meditation. Stare into
a candle flame or glass of water and let your mind become still. Thoughts may intrude at first; it’s perfectly natural. Just push
them away and focus on stillness. With practice, you’ll be amazed at the information and guidance you’ll be able to access
through meditation.
Next, spend time in prayer. Although the specific prayers you use don’t matter, you may choose to focus on thanks and
appreciation to keep on a positive track.
One of the many benefits of prayer is that it raises our consciousness into a level where we can perceive psychic impressions.
And remember, we’re all connected, so we elevate others as well as ourselves when we pray. In fact, people working individually
are raising the consciousness of the entire planet.
Next, develop your imagination. There are lots of techniques for this, but one of the easiest is to simply look up at the clouds the
way you did when you were a kid and let your thoughts roam free.
Children are natural psychics and mediums because they haven’t yet learned what is “possible” or “impossible” from adults. Their
minds are wide open. They expect the miraculous to happen, and it does. So think like a child and stretch your mind. Who knows
what you might see in the clouds?
Dreams are also important tools for psychic development. If you tend not to remember your dreams, then ask your Spirit Guides
for their help. Before you go to sleep give yourself the positive affirmation that you’ll remember at least one dream. And keep a
pad and pen by the bed so you can jot the images down as soon as you wake up, because you’re going to find that you do start to
remember them! And they’re full of insight, guidance, and information from your Spirit Guides as well as loved ones on the Other
Side.
Another very important point is to learn all that you can from the experiences of others. It doesn’t have to cost you a dime—take
books and tapes out of the library, attend workshops, many of which are free. Do you have a favorite psychic or metaphysical
writer, such as Rosemary Altea or Brian Weiss? Study their works and learn all that you can from them.
Then, choose a tool that feels right to you personally and use it as a point of focus. There are many—such as palmistry, tarot
cards, and astrology. You’ll find that it’s fun to experiment with them.
For example, you might want to try a technique called psychometry. Hold an object—often a watch or piece of jewelry—and see
what impressions you receive from the energies in that object. Write down the impressions that come to you. Trust your intuition.
Don’t second guess yourself. (Remember, John Edward says that “edit” is a four-letter word!) In time, and after trying out
several tools, you’ll find the one that feels right to you.
One simple and effective way to practice using your intuition is to have someone put something in a box and try to guess what it
is. Meditate for a few minutes and then focus on the box. What impressions do you get? What colors come to mind? What
textures? What shapes? Check the box and see what’s inside. Some of the everyday objects you might use are a teddy bear, a
bunch of flowers, or a purse. Give yourself credit for whatever you get right and keep practicing!
Here’s another idea. Set aside a specific time, say 7 PM, when you and a friend will practice sending and receiving images. A few
minutes before the appointed time get comfortable, do a short meditation, and think about your friend. See her in your mind. Send
her an image: the Eiffel tower or an orange or a snowman. Think about the image and send it to her. Later, when you compare
notes, you may be amazed at how accurate her impressions were. Next time, switch roles. Have your friend send an image while
you try to receive it.
And keep in mind that distance does not matter. Universal consciousness knows neither time nor space. Your friend may be next
door, in Albuquerque, or in Australia. Distance has no effect on the sending or receiving of telepathic images. That’s why
psychics are able to give readings for people over the phone or on the Internet.
Trust yourself, open your mind, study the techniques of others, and practice. These are some of the keys that will unlock your
psychic potential.
