The Ebenezer Spirits,
“M-A” (L), and Mary (Blue dress)

The Case
On October 3rd, 2007, Pat went to a house off Ebenezer Rd in Knoxville, TN, to investigate a claim made by a client (Donna
Porter) whose granddaughters had seen and heard ghostly activity in their family’s rental house. Donna also stated the family had
a photo, taken on a cell phone, that allegedly showed a ghost, or ghosts. Pat knew nothing about Donna’s family or the house and
property before visiting on October 3rd.

The House
Only mother Katie is present for the investigation. Both of the daughters (ages 10 and 14) living in the house had reported seeing
the spirit of a young girl in the back bedroom and in the hallway leading from the bedroom. Both also reported hearing noises in
the room and closet on several occasions.

The Investigation
The investigation began with a group interview as Pat spoke with Katie about her daughters’ recollections of what they had seen
and heard. Katie mentioned that her daughters would “only go in the bedroom in question to get clothes, very quickly, and would
sleep on a couch in the living room or in another bedroom as far away from that end of the house as possible.”

As the interview concluded, Pat walked around the living room to pick up on any “energy” in the room, and gave the following
account:

“This is a little girl (10 to 12 years old). She has on a long dress and she has long straggly hair. She has been abused by someone;
possibly an uncle or neighbor but not her father. Her father knew about the abuse but refused to acknowledge it. This little girl is
earth-bound due to the abuse and a traumatic event that happened here. It happened on this property, before this house was built,
and the girl connects to someone or something in this location and is unable to leave.”

After Pat finished her assessment of the “energy”, Katie handed Pat a photo that her daughter had taken with her cell phone. Pat
easily identified, as did other witnesses, the image(s) in the photo of a little girl and an older woman. The girl matched the
description given by Pat. Pat mentioned that it was the best photo of a spirit she had ever seen.

Prior to going into the bedroom, Pat said a prayer for protection and to help the spirit go into the light. In the bedroom, Pat said
that there was a woman with the girl and that it was probably the mother trying to protect her child. She said the mother felt very
guilty because she could not protect her child before, and was trying to protect her now. She described the mother as “wearing a
night gown with her hair under a wrap or cap”. She said the mother’s name was “M-A…something with M-A, like Mable.” She
said the girl’s name was Mary and again that she was around 10 years old. Katie then stated that her 10 year-old’s middle name
was Maria and Pat said, “That could be another reason why the spirit girl connected to that room.”

Pat then told the mother (M-A) to “…take your daughter’s hand and go to the light. You do not need to feel guilty anymore about
anything…everything is okay and it is time for you and your daughter to go to the light.” Pat stated that the mother curtsied and
the daughter waved both hands and as they turned to go to the light, a man was there to greet them.

The photo was again examined and the spirit figure of the mother was noticed to the left of the girl and they appeared to be
looking at each other. Pat then added these thoughts: “The mother and daughter did not die at the same time. The daughter died
from the abuse and the mother may have grieved herself to death, over a period of time, because she couldn’t protect her. She
reiterated that the children and animals that live in the house are the reasons that the spirit girl is in that particular house.

Research
On October 10th, John Hodge went to the Knox County Register of Deeds office and the Knoxville Archives Building to research
the property’s history.

Property deeds were traced back to 1848 and newlywed owners Dr Pierson W Walker and wife, M. A. (Margaret) Fleming
Walker. The property at that time was 170 acres with a farmhouse.

Check of the 1860 Census for Knox County, District 11, confirms daughter Mary was 3 months old. According to 1870 Census,
10 year-old Mary lived with the family on the property. By 1880, there was no Mary in the house and no record of any Mary
Walker marrying in Knox County between 1870 and 1900. We believe this confirms Mary’s death between 1870 and 1880 and
Pat believes she died shortly after the 1870 census was taken.

Update
On April 23rd, 2008, John spoke with Donna who confirmed that since Pat’s visit, no family members have heard any unusual
activity in the house and that her granddaughters now slept in their own rooms and loved the house where they were once afraid
to live.
